June 16, 2024 - In-Svalbard

This is going to be a shorter, more uneventful entry. The past few days have been rather packed with activity, and I’m using today to catch up a bit. I spend the morning writing and also generating a few key maps for earlier entries. These unfortunately might be the only maps I can make on this trip without using an online interface like ArcGIS - my Adobe CC educational account has seemingly expired, and I only manage to get around the software freeze by activating a seven-day trial. I also update the website, and get a few more things in line with the way I want them to look.

In the evening, I call home and talk to my sister and dad on the phone. I go for a walk around Adventdalen while wrapping up the phone call, ending my meandering at a sushi restaurant located inside of the Svalbard Hotell that I’d been meaning to try.  I grab dinner inside, a fresh salmon poke bowl with hot tea. As I’m leaving, I see my friends in the wedding party again who are just arriving for dinner, also wanting to try this restaurant for the first time. I find it a bit funny and ever so slightly awkward how often I keep seeing them, as though I’m somehow crashing their planned getaway as a reoccurring character deep in the arctic; it’s a small town, but so far I hadn’t really run into anyone else more than once, let alone three or four random times at very different locations.

That’s all I have for today - it was a much-needed slow moment for reflection.
