I begin the day still unsure what to do about the rental car, and by extension, traveling to Hammerfest.  I’d planned to visit only one or two things in the small town to the north; so sparse was the itinerary that I now have pause about committing to another 8 hour drive there, a one night stay, and an 8 hour drive back.  In addition to this, if I could cut the rental car out of the equation I’d save a good deal of money between the reservation, the insurance, and the gas. I quickly check to make sure my hotel reservation in Hammerfest is refundable - it is.

With this in mind I walk down to breakfast. This is the point in my travel beyond which I will only be staying in hotels. As such, I made sure they served breakfast as a means of eliminating half of my daily food per diem. This seems a good time to mention: food here is expensive. It’s not prohibitively costly, but it makes me miss the prices for nice sit down restaurants back home in Ann Arbor. Luckily, the hotel breakfast here is great.

I return to my room and decide to cancel my hotel in Hammerfest. I’d thought about it extensively during breakfast, and the fatigue I’m feeling plus cost savings that could be realized were enough justification for me. There’s also an archive here in Tromsø with limited hours (exclusively open on Mondays) I’d have to pass on visiting altogether if I drove to Hammerfest.  The significance of this archive outweighs the sightseeing I’d planned to do in Hammerfest.  After canceling the reservation for my hotel, I quickly book another in Tromsø for the next couple of nights - now instead of continuing to bounce back and forth from location to location, I’ll be staying in this city until it’s time to fly into Svalbard.

Relief washes over me, and I’m finally able to get some work done editing photos and fixing up the Cold Coast Atlas website. This occupies much of my day. Later on, I talk to my brother over video chat, and then go grab some prosciutto pizza downstairs for dinner. Today is a day of much needed rest.
